From tiny shrines to towering skyscrapers, this collection juxtaposes the ordinary and the extraordinary of this unique place. Printed to the highest quality, using museum quality fine-art paper, these are beautiful keepsakes for anyone connected to Hong Kong.
Each subject I photograph varies enormously, some are mere centimetres in size while others are several metres wide, some are recognisable whilst others completely abstract.
Every piece has its own story, its own distinctive sense of place, imagined through its complex layers of paint and erosion created through the inexorable passage of time.
The past few months of Covid-19 have affected everyone. To play my part in our recovery as a planet, and as a community, I’ve chosen to give 25% of profits from each image sold in this collection to benefit the charity closest to my heart, EcoDrive Hong Kong.
EcoDrive promotes the awareness and reduction of single use plastic in Hong Kong through education, connecting with corporates, and providing possible solutions. By motivating and driving each individual to make a lifestyle change, we believe together we can make a difference to the planet we are share.
This is a portion of an abandoned building on the outskirts of Tai-O. The bricks have been exposed from the render of the building over time. The original brickwork has yet to see the effects of time and so appears bright in comparison to the stained, dark render

Old shutters on the entrance to a shop in Tai-o. On the shutter is a poem written in old Chinese. The undulation of the shutters not only brings the eye down through the text but leads it across.

This print is of chinese banners which lead to peoples homes. The ripped irregular nature of the red denotes what was once there but has now been lost. We will never quite know what it said or who it was for.

Two buildings contrasting one another in Coloane, Macau, Hong Kong
From the Song Dynasty onwards until the Portuguese arrival in 1864, Coloane was a sea salt farm for China. After their arrival, the Portuguese made Macau an important trading port, but Coloane remained largely deserted, and was used as a base by pirates until 1910.
Sadly most of the quaint Portuguese influences have been lost in Macau due to the massive surge of Casinos, but small pockets within Coloane remain relatively unchanged. This image is the border between two of the colourful houses that line the seafront. I loved the vibrant colours and imperfect nature of the paints’ application.
An abandoned mansion in the middle of the rainforest was one of my highlights of the trip. This inner portion of one of the bedroom walls, which has been open to the elements since the 1930s, jumped out at me to create an abstract image. The stories this place could have told!

The concrete render of many buildings of Hong Kong give a perfect canvas for my subjects to stand proud. This gives me freedom to insert colour and texture to add to the already characterful background layer of the image
An unusual image for myself but I couldn’t overlook this intriguing poster of an Orang-utan amongst the colourful spray paint and the synonymous Hong Kong concrete canvas beneath.

Having been given exclusive access to Tuthill Porsche, I searched all day for potential subjects. I eventually found a small room next to the paint booth where paint is mixed and prepared for application on the cars. This photograph is a close-up of the wall behind the mixing machine. The paint has flicked and dripped onto it in the process of being mixed. All colours here and OEM Porsche colours.

I’ve been given exclusive access to Tuthill Porsche in Oxfordshire. Hundreds of Porsche’s surround me, cars from the 1960’s all the way to the new flagship models. Within the spray booth, a metal cabinet in the corner stocks all the different colour spray cans used to paint the classic Porsches here. Over the years, the car painters have transferred their paint covered fingertips, while mixing the paint, onto the cabinet doors resulting in a fantastic accidental abstract painting. Each colour represents a colour specific to Porsche themselves.

Down the small alleyways of Oxford I never know what I'm going to find. On this occasion I came across a wall with probably years worth of posters haphazardly glued onto of one another. Many had been partially ripped off and another glued on top in its place. I spent longer than I care to mention staring at these posters, to the bemusement of passers-by, figuring out a composition to include not just the varying colours but also an element of order. I settled on this composition where it seemed all the posters converged into the middle of the frame. A lesson to myself to keep an eye out for photographs in the strangest of places.

A house sized unused billboard near Summertown in Oxford.
A billboard that spanned a series of houses on the edge of Summertown was in the process of being replaced. All that was left was small patches of pixels and paper.

An Oxford College wall in dis-repair.
Whilst the majority of Oxford has been built in limestone, throughout its history the source of the limestone has constantly changed. The ‘Headington stone’ is the closest quarry and has provided the majority of the stone for the iconic colleges. This ‘oolitic limestone’ is easily damaged by acid rain and soot from cars. This has meant most buildings in Oxford have had to replace their walls at some stage during their lifetime.
The orange, greys and whites in this image and partially ripped off poster have been subjected to many different types of erosion and weathering, human and natural, giving it fascinating textures and subtle colours.

This abstract is the underside of a stone which has been cut using a carving tool. The colours appear as if the stone was dipped into Suminagashi, which literally means "ink floating" and is an ancient Japanese technique of painting on water.

An extreme close-up of an upturned canoe on the shores of Tai-O, Hong Kong. The bottom of the small canoe, used for fishing, shows its battle scars from being dragged up and down the sharp rocks onto a small beach, where it is launched into the tidal waters of this traditional fishing village. This repetitive process has exposed the layers of paint applied to the canoe over its lifetime.

I journeyed into the heart of Salcombe’s boat building workshops. Small sections of the workshop walls seemed to be dedicated to aid the removal of excess paint from the craftman’s paintbrushes. Decades of continual flicking and dabbing of the brushes onto the same section of wall, produces these fantastic accidental oil paintings onto the breeze block wall. Each colour is most likely linked to specific boats that, still decades later, reside in the Salcombe estuary just metres away from the workshop gates.

I journeyed into the heart of Salcombe’s boat building workshops. Small sections of the workshop walls seemed to be dedicated to aid the removal of excess paint from the craftman’s paintbrushes. Decades of continual flicking and dabbing of the brushes onto the same section of wall, produces these fantastic accidental oil paintings onto the breeze block wall. Each colour is most likely linked to specific boats that, still decades later, reside in the Salcombe estuary just metres away from the workshop gates.

I’m walking around Oxford with my camera and tripod slung over my shoulder, looking for inspiration. It’s always hard to narrow down a potential subject as they are always found in the weirdest and most wonderful places. I notice a private marina on Osney Island, full of river boats with their hulls being re-painted. This boat’s hull, battered and bruised from its life in The Thames, caught my eye. I arrived just in time before it’s new fresh paint job. When taking the shot, I loved the splashes of bright turquoise as if it was coral reef shot from above.

Two buildings contrast to one another in Coloane, Macau. From the Song dynasty onwards and until the Portuguese arrival in 1864, Coloane was a sea salt farm for China. After their arrival, the Portuguese made Macau an important trading port, but Coloane remained largely deserted, and was used as a base by pirates until 1910. The island became more populated after the Estrada do Istmo causeway connecting Coloane with Taipa was completed in 1969.

Following a footpath down the Norfolk Broads, I came across this abandoned boat builder’s workshop on the banks of the canal. I love exploring these derelict buildings. On the first wall into the building was where the paint shop used to be. It was almost pitch black and the floor was covered in a thick mud with the occasional paintbrush poking through it. I crammed myself into the corner of the room in order to take this picture. It was so dark it took a 25 second exposure.

This image was taken in Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong. The unique colours of the Star Ferry are, of course, evident in the picture. However, by adding the gates into the picture, the image becomes less abstract, as it now has its own sense of place.

A varnished old panelled door in the small fishing village on the outskirts of Hong Kong.
The weathered wood of the panelled door has been repeatedly varnished in an attempt to extend its life in the salty sea air of Tai-O. The wood proudly reveals its past through each scratch, blemish and bruise to produce a far more interesting and beautiful subject than when it was first built.

Within the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, unspoilt traditional villages nestle into the mountain sides. The heat from the summer sun bleaches and cracks the old rendering on the faces of the buildings creating lovely patina. Walking through these sleepy villages was fascinating. This particular wall on an abandoned house drew me in. The wave-like transition throughout the image gives it a distinct focal point. The subtle warm colours together with the desaturated greys from the concrete underneath provided the added texture to the image.
Here, paint has been carelessly dropped onto the pavement from re-painting the vibrantly coloured houses of the Portuguese influenced village of Coloane, Macau.

I spotted this image in Sheung Wan, a bustling part of Hong Kong with so much history and culture. There are so many details in this image all fighting hard to represent themselves. Firstly, the strong linear band of orange rust dissecting the image into two halves. Then, the ripped off paper with Chinese writing fading off out of the frame, to the more layered texture of the white render. A great find!
